It is one of the most important and famous institutes in the world that does research in the areas of Tibetan language and culture. It also has in its premises a museum, a Tibetan library with rich collections and also a reference center about Tibet and Himalayas in general. Sikkim is primarily a Buddhist state with many Tibetan refugees making it their home. The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a place dedicated to the history of Tibetan-Buddhist and its culture. Despite being primarily a place of research, it has become a famous tourist attraction of Gangtok. Visitors touring Gangtok, come to the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to gather information about the philosophy, history, art, literature, and architecture related to Buddhism. The land for the institute was donated by the Late King of Sikkim, Tashi Namgyal, and its foundation stone was laid by none other than the Dalai Lama in February 1957. The institute was inaugurated by the 1st Prime Minister of India on 1st October 1958.
