Umananda Island is the smallest inhabited river islet in the middle of river Brahmaputra, flowing through the city of Guwahati in Assam, a state in northeast India. This religious island is among the best places to visit in Assam in June and should be on the bucket list of every traveler visiting Assam. Also called Peacock Island by the British, this small islet owes its fame to its location smack in the middle of river Brahmaputra and the fact that it is easily accessible from Guwahati. This island is among the smallest islands of the world and houses the famous Umananda Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. An island with many legends associated with it, it's pristine and calm environ has not been destroyed by the presence of human beings as yet. It was known as Peacock Island among the British Colonists who named it so based on its shape. The Island is home to a very rare and endangered species called _ãÄGolden Langurs_ã_ who are considered to be highly sacred among the people of the Himalayas.
